Take the Red Pill....

Spoiler Alert - Red!!

I was watching The Matrix film the other week and there is one scene that continues to jump into my mind in relation to my work in Dispute Resolution and Prevention. 

Its the scene where Morpheus (cool shades) meets Neo for the first time and shows Neo what the Matrix is, by asking him to choose between taking a blue pill or a red pill.

Allow me to now recreate the scene between you and I. I will play Morpheus and you can be kick ass Neo. Ready? Action!! (Always wanted to say that..)

Me: Let me tell you why you’re here? You’re here because you know that something is wrong.

You: What is it?

Me: I’ve watched you. You are a great contractor. What you do in contracting is awesome, but you struggle to get paid.

You shrug.

You: Its not that awesome (you lie). 

Me: But it is. But how do you explain what has been happening to you? 

I lean forward.

Me: You were trained to provide your trade skills to the industry. But what about getting paid for those skills?

You: Go on...

Me: As a contractor you may struggle to separate the possible from the impossible. It can be hard sometimes for me to free companies like yours.

You: Free us from what?

Me: From the Disputes.

You look straight into my eyes.

Me: Do you want to know how you can do this?

You swallow and nod your head.

Me: Its that feeling you have had all your working life. That feeling that something was wrong with the industry. You don’t know what it is but it’s there, like a splinter in your business, driving you crazy, driving you to me. But what is the way forward?

Outside the wind rattles the windows.

Me: Disputes are everywhere, they are all around us, on many contracts. You can see them on many of your jobs, or your competitors jobs. You feel it when you submit a claim and especially around final account time. It is the poor pre and post contract processes that are blinding you from the truth.

You: What truth?

Me: That you can prevent most disputes and ensure that if you do encounter them you are fully capable of proving your entitlement.

Outside thunder roars and lightning splits the sky (sorry really getting into this now!!)

Me: Unfortunately, I cannot tell you how to avoid a dispute. You have to read it for yourself.

You: Where?

Me: Take hold of your mouse.

Me: Below are two links. On the right is the Red Pill. On the left a Blue Pill.

Me: This is your last chance. After this there is no going back.

Me: You click the Blue Pill and the story ends. You go about your business, praying that this job will be different from the last. You’ll continue to get into disputes, lose money, stress out, lose relationships and hope that you can carry on in business....believe whatever you want to believe.
