The Right Tool for the Job
Guess the odd one out...
Plumbing, Drilling, Bricklaying, Demolition, Plastering, Heating & Ventilation, Electrical, Roofing or Commercial Manager.
Commercial Manager. Right? Actually, wrong.
The truth is there is no odd one out! They are all specialised occupations or trades if you prefer.
Many construction businesses begin because the principal player(s) is a trade’s specialist. They know exactly how to provide their core skills and they understand that they need to charge for it.
As is the way, when it comes to an area of a project which they do not specialise in, the company will often seek to sub-contract to another specialist. Nothing wrong in that is there? Just simply “using the right tool for the job”.
As a Commercial Manager, I know many tradesmen and business owners in construction. The one great thing they all have in common is the fact they take enormous pride in delivering a good job.
But what differentiates good companies from truly great companies is not how good their trade skills are but their commercial awareness and management processes.
Let me digress for a second and let’s consider Jordan (Katie Price). Some would argue she has little talent and no skills but no one can deny the fact that she is a multi-millionaire. Quite clearly, her success is down to her commercial skill (or that of the person she employs to look after it!)
Take McDonalds as another example, their hamburgers could never be described as the best but they have such sound systems in place and fine business acumen that they are arguably the most successful hamburger joint in the world.
Let me ask you another question. Do you know a contractor or a competitor who might not be of the same quality as your company but seems to be extremely rich and successful?
It is all down to commercial skill.
The chances are they employ somebody or outsource it to a specialist who has the practiced skills, knowledge and experience to carry out the job to the right standards.
Just like any other sub-contractor, at ConstructPRO, we have a team of specialists who specialise in the use of their tools - knowledge and experience of contracts and business.
