Some 22,990 construction firms reported financial problems in Q1 making it one of the worst hit sectors in the economy.

  • Guess the odd one out...

Plumbing, Drilling, Bricklaying, Demolition, Plastering, Heating & Ventilation, Electrical, Roofing or Commercial Manager.

    Commercial Manager. Right? Actually, wrong.

The truth is there is no odd one out! They are all specialised occupations or trades if you prefer.

Many construction businesses begin because the principal player(s) is a trade’s specialist. They know exactly how to provide their core skills and they understand that they need to charge for it.

  • A critical facet of any project monitor is an ability to be impartial, so that stakeholders in the project have the confidence that all advice and reports are accurate and tell the whole story.

  • In today's hard-pressed, cut-throat and highly volatile construction market, many contractors are playing Russian Roulette by submitting bids below the value that they will actually cost.

The English language doesn't have a word for this practice. It does have a fairly unique word for estimating something's value at zero or nothing.

    Floccinaucinihilipilification.

  • The reason a dispute arises usually holds the answer as to which method is best to resolve it. I tend to categorise Disputes into two camps.

One is a genuine difference of opinion, this can usually be settled by an independent expert opinion stating or restating facts or information that one or both parties might not have been aware of.

The other, which is becoming increasingly prevalent, is when one or both parties are acting out of self interest or they have a hidden agenda. Instead of being genuine they will act disingenuously.

  • No sadly this isn't a joke but if you have ever been in a genuine dispute then you will no doubt be aware of the punch line.

But to answer this you have to understand the origins of a dispute.

Usually one side makes a claim / statement that is contradicted by the other side giving rise to a disagreement.

A disagreement is not a Dispute.

The disagreement only graduates to a dispute when either party, for whatever reasons, cannot accept the consequences of the disagreement and they insist that it is resolved.
